If you want something cheap and don't want to go with DJI, this might be your best option.
These days, there aren’t a lot of cheap 4K camera drones out there unless you go with something like the DJI Phantom 3 SE. For those of you looking for something a little different, the Autel X-Star Premium is the closest thing you’ll find to the Phantom 3 series.
The first thing you’ll notice about the X-Star Premium is the high-visibility orange and black color. Yes, it does look like a construction cone, but this makes it extremely easy to spot in the air from hundreds of feet away. You could also use it for search-and-rescue applications where other people might need to spot the drone.
Feature wise, the X-Star Premium is very similar to the Phantom 3 SE.
It shoots 4K video on a 3 axis gimbal, the real world flight time is similar to the Phantom 3 at about 20 minutes, and it has a vision positioning camera on the bottom for more stable hovering. The only thing it lacks is range. At 1.2 miles, it’s not bad at all, but the Phantom 3 SE can get up to 2.5 miles, although far distances like that could be limited by flight time depending on how windy it is.
The controller is a bit different from the Phantom 3. One thing I like is that it has an integrated LCD display to show you important flight information just like the controller for the DJI Mavic Pro.
The Phantom 3 series does fly better than the X-Star Premium, but it’s not something you would notice unless you were comparing them side by side. The Phantom 3 is just a bit more agile, especially when it goes into RTH (return-to-home) mode and flies back to the home position.
So why buy the Autel Robotics X-Star Premium? Well, it’s orange which is good for more pro applications, It has great customer support, and it even comes with a nice carrying case for free.
